DeGroot’s Spire Arborvitae

Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire'

DeGroot’s Spire Arborvitae is a formal-looking, narrow cultivar of the Eastern US native conifer, Thuja occidentalis. Excellent in pairs flanking doorways and arranged in groups as a privacy screen. DeGroot’s growth habit is neat and compact for a naturally columnar shape. Flat sprays of deep green foliage create an interesting texture, complementing many planting schemes.

I planted 3 DeGroot’s Spire along our easement in late 2021, part of my plan to create an ‘enclosed’ space in our front yard. They are situated next to two Thuja plicata ‘Virescens’, and together these two plantings will grow over time to form a dark green backdrop and shield our front yard from the neighbor’s driveway. As of this writing in 2023, these DeGroot’s have grown about a foot in height since I first planted them in December of 2021.
