Mountain Pepper

AKA: Tasmanian Pepper

Drimys lanceolata

This plant died!

Both specimens did terribly – eaten by root weevils and then lost most leaves over winter. If I try this one again I’ll likely put it in a pot on the deck, possibly sheltering it in the sunroom over winter.

UPDATE 2021: Planted one in the back yard, one in the north side yard by the fence/acuba. Unfortunately root weevils seem to love this plant, which pretty much ruins the look. I may end up pulling these out and putting them in pots.

I still have no idea where to put this one – it’s in pot on the deck for now. I love the glossy pointed leaves and red stems. They look great at their current nursery gallon pot size, but they get to 10 x 10 feet, so I’m waiting until all the hidden perennials plants have shown themselves this spring – maybe I’ll have a better sense of where they might fit after that

About Me

Hi! I'm Lorie and I wrangle plants in a muddy, feral shade garden in the Pacific Northwest. I built this site to serve as a gardening journal and quasi-accurate record of planting successes and failures. My goal is to help "future me" be a better gardener. I hope what I've learned along the way can be useful to you too. Thanks for visiting!
