Coral Bark Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku'

We bought this tree to obscure our view into the neighbor’s yard, which at the time – due to renters – had turned into a weedy mess. It’s right outside of a picture window where we have our breakfast table. This tree has something to look at in every season – bright green spring growth, summer texture, fall orange color and red stems in winter. I’m a little nervous about the split in the bark on the backside of the tree on one side. We had another maple in the front yard that died, probably from too many splits at the base of the tree. I’d be really sad if we lost this one!

One of my favorite trees. Red bark color is subdued due to less sun and algae growth. Unfortunately, trunk as a split on the backside which I'm hoping won't progress.

    About Me

Hi! I'm Lorie and I wrangle plants in a muddy, feral shade garden in the Pacific Northwest. I built this site to serve as a gardening journal and quasi-accurate record of planting successes and failures. My goal is to help "future me" be a better gardener. I hope what I've learned along the way can be useful to you too. Thanks for visiting!
