Sunset Glow Clumping Bamboo

AKA: Dragon's head bamboo

Fargesia rufa

Planted as an emergency privacy screen in pots on our back deck, these pricey plants ($60/gallon!) are doing their job well but a little less upright than I’d hoped. The fluffiness is getting in the way of our dining table so I’m trying to decide if adding some type of plant support would look dumb or not. An alternative is to trim back the ones fluffing out in the wrong direction. So far, 6-months and a spring season out, the culms are an average of 4 feet and have spread nicely to take up more space in the planters. I expect they will get to maybe 5-1/2 feet next year, and finally provide the screen I’ve been wanting

Water regularly. zones 5 - 9. Thrives in cooler summer regions. Cut out any flowering shoots promptly to discourage more from forming.

    About Me

Hi! I'm Lorie and I wrangle plants in a muddy, feral shade garden in the Pacific Northwest. I built this site to serve as a gardening journal and quasi-accurate record of planting successes and failures. My goal is to help "future me" be a better gardener. I hope what I've learned along the way can be useful to you too. Thanks for visiting!
