Sargent’s Weeping Hemlock

Tsuga canadensis 'Pendula'

This is one of those plants I knew I had to have when I passed by it at the nursery. It’s a unique looking conifer that’s made for the shade, and my first weeping tree – if you don’t count the Weeping Alaska cedar, which has weepy branches but an upright trunk. I looked into what this little conifer will look like when it grows up, and found everything from graceful, airy specimens with interesting trunk structure to mountainous, Pac Man ghost lookalikes. I’m not a fan of the latter so I’ll need a good selective pruning strategy – luckily I’ll probably have a few years before I need to learn how!

Update: After deciding my garage planting were looking too patchwork, I moved this guy after 2 years to a pot in on the back deck, which should be fine according to Great Plant Picks
