Gentsch White Hemlock

Tsuga C. 'Gentsch White'

We stopped by a Savage Plants on the way back from a family gathering over on Bainbridge island. They have a shade section with a number of unusual plants and this one caught my eye. I’m continually on the lookout for conifers that can tolerate shade, and this one apparently takes FULL SHADE. I was skeptical about that – and still am – so I planted it in a sunnier spot. Unfortunately didn’t weather our unusually cold winter too well, but I’m hoping it springs back this summer. If it does, I might need to get more! The wispy shape and frosty color looks great next to the Emperor Japanese maple we planted a few feet away.
